The Lotus brand was purchased by Proton in 1994 when the previous owner Romano Artoli decided to apply for a bankruptcy hearing.

The Lotus background goes as far back as 1952 formed as Lotus Engineering Ltd by Colin Chapman. The company was based inside an old stable which was situated behind a Railway Hotel in the town of Hornsey.
