History on Lotus

The origins of the name Lotus and its Roundel Badge were lost with the death of Colin Chapman the founder of Lotus. Part of the badge is made up of the initials of Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman.

In 1951 the first car was made to actually be called a “Lotus” and was later known as the ‘Mark 3’.

Lotus Engineering Ltd was started in 1952 by Colin Chapman. The companies’ first factory was behind the Railway Hotel Hornsy, North London in some old stables. In 1954 ‘Team Lotus’ was created splitting off from Lotus Engineering and became competitive in Formula 1 racing from 1958-1994.

In 1952 the first Lotus series production car was started the Mark 6.

In 1958 Group Lotus PLC was formed by Chapman.

In 1959 Lotus moves to a purpose built factory in Cheshunt.

The Lotus got its first championship Grand Prix win in 1960 with the Type 18 in Monte Carlo driven by Stirling Moss drove for the Rob Walker team. While in 1961 the Lotus Type 21 won their first World Championship Grand Prix.

Lotus moved again to a 2nd purpose built factory in 1966 in Hethel Norfolk. It was built on a former US Air force base and the runways were converted into a 2.5 mile test track.

Colin Chapman died in 1982 from a heart attack aged 54.

General Motors bought Lotus in 1986 to later sell it to Bugatti International for £30 million in 1993. Lotus was sold yet again in 1996 to Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd (Proton) buying 80% of the company.
